2018 Gaming Project Plans

Heyo! It’s 2018 and I’m trying to wrangle in the voraciousness of my gaming. Setting some goals and things for all the projects in my life and I saw this cool idea for a post by Antoine Bergeron one of the cohosts of @GeeksoftheNorth he broke his resolutions of sorts into Painting, Sculpting, Terrain, Gaming, Podcasting and Events. I’ve added a few sections and removed others because we all game one way or another ha. So, here’s my 2018 plans that are sure to change.. but I’ll do my best to stick with them.

Miniature Gaming:

For tabletop miniature gaming I know of way too many systems so it’s very hard for me to narrow it down in fact I tried and I got a list of 15! Ha, fifteen different games is crazy. So, I looked at it all again and managed to cut it down to five not including the games set to release or announce in 2018..

Malifaux – Malifaux has been my jam for some time it’s strategy and tactics are top notch. I love playing, painting and collecting my Gremlins faction even though I’ve only ever won twice and I’ve lost almost thirty games with them. It’s too good I enjoy all the varied crew interactions and the competitive scene even, which is very rare for me. Malifaux specific goals for 2018 are to paint the rest of the gremlins I have and add another Gremlin master or two to the collection. I imagine Brewmaster and Zipp. There’s a local group playing consistently and I’d like to get stuck in there.

Bushido – https://gctstudios.com/ Bushido would probably take the cake on top miniature game for me if the community were larger. I really love the activation mechanics and the player interaction with choosing dice when making attacks. I own small forces of the Cult of Yuri and the Temple of Ro-Kan. The plan for 2018 is to get them all painted to play against one another and to continue supporting the game via blog posts and the like. Depending on how that goes I may add some pieces to either or both sides but only once the painting is done.

Batman Miniatures Game – https://www.knightmodels.com/batman-miniature-game/ Knight Models released a second edition of this game not too long ago that I haven’t considered but I was very excited about the first edition. I found a guy offloading his collections so I’ve got a full Penguin faction and a mediocre Scarecrow faction to paint and learn the second edition with. The only pieces I’d add would be a third force to have a reason to paint batman himself.

Dark Age – http://dark-age.com/ Dark Age has been on my radar since a demo game back at gencon 2011. They recently released a shadow dragyri faction that has me convinced. The faction has two awesome boxes that I want to run in a list. The Umbra shadow elemental and the Spiderling unit. I don’t even care if they’re good, looking forward to that indeed. I’ll choose a second faction and pick at least a starter up for it, jury is still out on which faction that would be though.

Saga 2.0 – http://www.studio-tomahawk.com/en/saga/ Saga, what do I know about it? Well… not very much at all. But I’m a fan of studio tomahawk’s game called Muskets and Tomahawks set during the French Indian war. I enjoy learning about the historical lore behind the units and it seems like a ‘popular’ historical wargame that I could hope to find opponents for. The second edition releases this February.

If for some miracle of a reason I get all that painting, collecting and writing done these are the other games on my radar. I’d love to review the mechanics and core books for all of them and many already teased miniatures I like it’s just a matter of time and money.

Tabletop RPGs:
It’s too good telling stories with folks. I’ve been lugging RPG books around with me for a decade now and I seldom get to run any games. GM is my preferred role, I recently discovered the wonders of Rolld20 and discord communities. Found there are tons of folks very interested in playing the games I’m interested in! So, RPGs are back in the rotation and I’ve been buried in rules, so good. There are a lot of miniature games but there are LOT of RPGs like way too many. An insane amount. Here are my top three to focus on for 2018 that oddly all start with ‘s’ and some runner ups because… the voraciousness is hard to contain.

Starfinder – https://paizo.com/starfinder/ Starfinder has all the Dnd\Pathfinder kind of vibes and community support but it’s in space with lasers and mechs and starships and anti-gravity with hundreds of aliens and ship templates different weapons and player races. There’s a crazy thing unfolding and I’m happy to be involved. I’m running a Starfinder group twice a month and our plans are to start recording the episodes to post them as an actual play podcast! I’ve also created a character for Starfinder Society that I’d like to work on leveling up, I’m new to the society play but it looks fun. I’m collaborating on a third-party supplement and I hope to maintain that to get some writing credits!

Symbaroum – https://www.modiphius.net/collections/symbaroum Dark fantasy in a Smaller world with some awesome Swedish folk lore as inspiration for the monsters and things. I’ve got a group queued up now to start playing twice a month mid-February. My plan is to keep that rolling as well to learn the system and such. My plan is to keep getting the hardback paizo releases and pick up some pdf of the third-party supplements. I already have so many though I doubt I’ll be adding much for some time. If I get an actual play podcast of my Starfinder group happening I’ll do the same with this group.

Shattered – http://shattered.neverdarkenough.com/ A post-post-apocalyptic grimdark sci-fi, horror, steampunk game!! I’ve only just learned about it. The main reason I considered it further is a player race called the Florvanna, some mushroom people whose look, lore and idea intrigues me! The book happens to be full of amazing art and I found an active discord community for the game. The plan right now is to get Symbaroum up and going with Starfinder then see about running a campaign for Shattered.

One can’t play multiple tabletop RPG very well, they take a lot of time and there is so much to digest. I’m already planning on running three different systems this year so most of these won’t see any of my time or money until late 2018 but they’re on my radar nonetheless!

I played World of Warcraft back in the glory days of Burning Crusade and Lich King expansions, that’s the only form of video gaming that really stuck with me. I recently found that video gaming a bit really helps me to relax and escape from the things in a way analog hobbies cannot. I tried every MMO under the sun to find something decent. Settled on The Secret World Legends by funcom and I could not be happier.

The Secret World: Legends – https://www.secretworldlegends.com/ TSW:L is an awesome game; the story is the best I’ve ever seen in an mmo and the quests are intricate and detailed some are downright hard puzzles. The zones are so well done and the game drips in theme. The theme being Lovecraftian, secret society, espionage, illuminati and templar style things. You’re an agent and these Lovecraft monsters are taking over. There are main quest lines that tell the story and plethora of side quests, many much more than the typical fetch quests of online games. I’m playing slowly, I don’t rush to max level or anything. Clearing every zone of quests and things to do before moving to the next.

Tera: Online – http://tera.enmasse.com/ is the backup game for me right now. I boosted a Lancer to level 60 but haven’t gotten back to playing. I like the emphasis on the dungeon grinding and the skill based mechanics of the lancer and the game in general. Just not enough time to invest ha.

There are other MMORPG on my radar but nothing big enough to write home about as MMOs are the thing I turn to only when I’ve read enough, painted too much or just need to tune out for a bit.

I’m not nor have I ever been much into TCG due to the method of acquiring cards randomly. I hate all the excess that leads to so I’ll probably buy singles but here’s the catch the one TCG I’ve been watching is called Architect TCG they’ve released little to no info on it so I don’t really know what’s going down there.

Architect TCG – https://www.facebook.com/ArchitectTCG/

I lied about there being one, ha. I’d very much like to review this game maybe even get a play or two in but I doubt I’ll get any decks as the community seems scattered at best. I bought a booster of the first set (justice League) and didn’t do anything but open and organize the cards lol. They released a Green Lantern set recently and have announced an Attack on Titan one coming soon. The cool thing with MetaX (pronounced meta cross) is that it crosses IP sure to be some crazy things. Someday I’ll review it ha.

I’d love to read comics but there is no time so instead I’m trying to re-read my collection. The plan is to review it slowly and decide what’s worth keeping.

I’m reading Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight archive trilogy and I hope to have it completed in 2018. Most of my reading when not gaming related is non-fiction and I’ve got some philosophical things coming up this year. Sources of the Self by Charles Taylor and Being and Time by Martin Heidegger.

Paizocon 2018 May – I live just outside Seattle these days so I’ll be at Paizocon hoping to run and play starfinder games as well as meet folks in the industry and learn about how to write for RPGs

Gencon 2018 – It’s been seven years since my last Gencon, please forgive me. Ha but I REALLY want to go here to play all the games I never get a chance to, to meet all the folks and to spread the Voracious Gamer brand eh?

We’ll see which if any of this I stick to and for how long. Hoping it can act as a guide or tempering mechanism on my gaming and allow me to really accomplish some of the projects I’ve laid out.  Cheers folks, accomplish something this year!
